Ellen Bass’s most recent book is Like a Beggar, and her poems have appeared in The New Yorker and American Poetry Review. A chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, she lives in Santa Cruz, California, and teaches writing at Pacific University. Her poem in this issue was written in 2001; she is, of course, chagrined that our environment is in even more peril now.

Christi Clancy lives in Madison, Wisconsin, where she teaches English at Beloit College and is a spinning instructor. She’s recently completed a novel, and her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Glimmer Train.

Laura Freudig lives with her husband and six children on the same Maine island where she grew up. She is a reformed multitasker, strong-coffee drinker, and the author of a children’s book, Halfway Wild.

Marie Greenstone is the pseudonym of a writer who grew up in rural Wisconsin. She now works in the aquatic sciences and lives near Lake Superior with her husband, her daughter, and a dog who hunts porcupine droppings.

Matthew LaPierre lives in Gorham, Maine, where he watches his three daughters play sports, sing in choruses, and act in plays. He’s been sober for nine years, during which time he has returned to writing and photography.

Mary Jane Nealon lives in Missoula, Montana, and has worked as a nurse and writer for forty-one years. Her dogs, Maisie and Cooper, like to listen to her read poetry, especially John Berryman’s. Her memoir, Beautiful Unbroken: One Nurse’s Life, was published in 2011 by Graywolf Press.
