Articulated by Dr. Fuhrman, the idea of Nutritarianism as a diet is very simple; health value equals nutrition level over caloric intake. More simply, Health=Nutrition/Calories.
Instead of worrying about what types of food you are eating, instead concern yourself about the amount of nutrition versus the amount of calories in your diet. Giving this diet a name, Nutritarian, is almost counter-productive. Instead, this is simply the smart way of eating. Meat, fat, carbs…whatever, is it nutritious? Are you making sure not to eat “empty” calories? That is what is important. Everything else is just preference.
A vegan can be incredibly unhealthy if all they eat is processed vegan food with zero nutritional value. An omnivore can be unhealthy if they neglect essential vitamins and minerals.
However, if your nutritional content is high compared to your caloric intake, Nutritarians argue that you can eat as much fried food, meat, or fats as you want.
Fad diets usually only have temporary results. Weight is regained at an overwhelming rate, and no permanent health benefits are achieved. What is needed is a permanent diet, one that we can take on for the rest of our lives, that does not deprive us of the satisfaction of eating delicious meals, and keeps us healthy into our elder years.
In addition to maintaining health, Dr. Fuhrman insists that following a Nutritarian diet can reverse diet related diseases such as hearth disease and dementia.
Leafy Greens, such as Kale, become the staple of the Nutritarian diet. Vegetables, fruits, seeds, and nuts, along with meats and dairy as desired, fill the rest. As long as essential vitamins and minerals are met, and empty calories from sugars and fats are reduced, a person can eat what they want when they want and still retain the health benefits associated with a Nutritarian diet.
This falls perfectly in line with the local/organic diet many Americans and citizens of the World, are attracting to. We can eat well and eat healthy at the same time, while maintaining a long healthy life. Be smart, eat well, and live a good life.
