Jeet Kune Do: The Application of Philosophy

Jeet Kune Do is the Martial Arts style and philosophy of Bruce Lee. It could be referred to as the first “Mixed Martial Art” or simply, the omni-philosophy of Martial Arts. Instead of following and adhering to a specific style or form, Bruce Lee sought to study any and all forms and styles, and allow them to naturally blend together, allowing for a more fluid and applicable approach to fighting and physical expression. In Tao of Jeet Kune Do, Bruce Lee attempts to communicate this approach and his learnings. Drawing from styles such as Karate, Judo, Kung-Fu, Boxing, and Wrestling, Lee takes only what is most effective, and works into a practice that best hones the mind and body.

Instead of letting a set style dictate how to react to encounters or emergencies, Lee allows the body and mind, free from restraint, to respond in the method best suited for such instance. This approach, stemmed from Taoist philosophy, can easily be incorporated into all aspects of life. In business, and relationships, while it is important to learn and study any style or process, it is best, when a situation arrives, to allow for the freedom necessary to adapt to the specific experience.

Accordingly, even Jeet Kune Do does not primarily lock itself into solely practicing fighting styles, but brings the philosophy into everyday practice, driven to enhance the individuals physical presence. One lesson in particular that has stood out to this writer is the idea of parking your car at least a block or two away from your destination, forcing yourself to at least walk a little bit. This develops ability, conditioning and discipline.
