If the goal of the Revolution is to free ourselves from top-down rule. To free ourselves from Corporate influences, from Governments run amok. To free ourselves from toil and need, from want and labor. If the goal of the Revolution is to pull support from the organizations that encourage the consolidation of power, and to give support to local, grassroots movements. If the Goal is to empower individuals and create systems that are sustainable and self powering, then the Revolution must embrace GNU/Linux as their operating system of choice.
GNU/Linux was created and develop by computer programmers who wanted software to be free. Free to acquire, free to share and free to modify. They wanted to run their computers themselves, without need of licensing, pirating, or hacking. They simply wanted to be free, so they created a free operating system; Linux.
In addition, Linux is also more environmentally friendly than DOS/Windows and OSX. It uses less energy to run a computer, doesn’t require packing or shipping to distribute its software, and has no centralized headquarters or global corporation administering it. It is ran by individuals, and used by a growing number of businesses and governments around the world. It is the OS of the Revolution.
Linux may be intimidating to many consumer level computer users, but distributions (versions of Linux) such as Ubuntu, have made it their goal to be user friendly, and companies like System76, have dedicated themselves to making an out-of-the-box end-user-friendly experience for first time Linux users. Those that first put their time and energy into making Linux functional, and now putting that same energy and time into making Linux accessible.
