In romantic love hate is a close polarity to love. You want to possess the beloved, but you can’t possess another being. So you’re frustrated. You live with the illusion that you are a separate entity who needs something, somebody. You confuse the feeling of being “in love” with the person who connects you with that feeling, and so become addicted to the connection, and want to grab it more and more.
