Automotive Photosynthesis: Another Look at SAIC-GM Concept “Carbon-Negative” YeZ (Leaf) Car

While the design is reminiscent of some Science-Fiction film, the fact that the aesthetic might not appeal to American drivers shouldn’t take away from the amazing technology being used in this auto-mobile.

Developed by Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation and General Motors, the YeZ (Chinese for Leaf) uses three different forms of alternative energy to power this all electric vehicle.

Like many EVs on the road in the U.S. and Europe, the YeZ utilizes solar panels on it’s roof to capture energy from the sun.  This isn’t the biggest breakthrough, what is innovative are its other two forms of power.

The hubs on the YeZ are free-spinning wind power generators.  Anyone who has driven around the U.S. will understand how easily this technology could be integrated into an American designed car.  Even if a driver doesn’t want free spinning “rims” a hub cap that protects an interior spinning wind-turbine could eventually work just as well.

But even the wind and solar power systems are not the true genius of this vehicle. Using a method of artificial photosynthesis, the YeZ extracts CO2 from the air surrounding the car and converts that into energy, expelling Oxygen as a bi-product; thus making the vehicle technically “carbon-negative.”

Further Concept

Developed by designers Michal Vlcek and Klavir, this concept vehicle uses actual photosynthesis, and plants’ ability to convert CO2 into sugars, to power its drive.
